Luxembourg-Ville
A couple of places I'd recommend seeing in Luxembourg-Ville. The core of the city
is within the old fortifications on the intersection of the Alzette and Pétrusse valleys.
I spent 10 years in Luxembourg. I lived in the city centre for 5 years, loved it, miss it -
a few minutes walk to Place d'Armes, a few minutes walk to Scott's.
Page quickly knocked together 2025-01-28 for a friend who's about to spend 2 days in Luxembourg-Ville.
A few top areas to visit with Street View links, a couple of walks to visit them are below.
Everything below is in easy walking distance within Luxembourg-Ville.
From Hôtel le Châtelet to
Place d'Armes -
A 20 minute walk or a 12 minute walk plus tram 2 stops.
From Place d'Armes to
The Grund -
walk about 15 minutes.
This walk takes you through from the main city square,
past the Grand Ducal Palace and to the Grund
for some great scenery. I named it the 'nostalgia tour' as the rue du Curé to
rue du St Esprit leg was done most days 1992-1997 as I walked between work and home.
And on to Scott's, the pub in the Grund, many days.
- Place d'Armes -
Christmas market at appropriate time of year, much of the rest of the year filled with dining.
- Exit Place d'Armes at southeast corner and turn on to rue du Curé.
- 5 rue du Curé - former office, pub next door.
- At first corner, Villeroy & Boch, turn right (south) on to rue du Fossé, Grand Ducal palace coming up on the left, place Guillaume II on the right.
- Grand Ducal Palace.
- Continue down rue du Fossé, cross rue Notre Dame (where it becomes rue de l'Eau) and on to Place de Clairefontaine.
- Statue of the Grand Duchess Charlotte on Place de Clairefontaine.
- Heading downhill to the east side, cross Place de Clairefontaine to rue du St Esprit, we're heading towards the elevator to go to the Grund.
- 19 rue du St Esprit - my former appartement.
- Keep walking south along rue du St Esprit, Mesa Verde coming up on the right, peeks into the Grund on the left.
- Rue du St Esprit bends to the right.
- Turn left under a footbridge on to Plateau du St Esprit.
- Head towards Ascenseur Elevator Plateau St.
Esprit Grund - the elevator is in a smaller building by itself towards the other end of the square.
There are two elevators - one to the carpark, other has a sign
(below) that shows it takes you to the Grund.
- Take elevator to Grund level, elevator exits in a tunnel, security, toilets, art on the wall.
- The Grund.
- Walk to the centre of the bridge, great views of the city, Scott's pub on the other side of the bridge on the right.
- Scott's - my local for 10 years.
Continuing after the nostalgia tour.
- Back to the elevator and to level 4 Promenade de la Corniche.
- Chemin de la Corniche for great view of the Grund.
